Iceland Midnight Sun Race 2010 was to be helt 10th of July
The Iceland Midnight Sun Race is a unique yacht race – the only one of its kind in the North Atlantic. The second competition will be held on 10 July 2010, a time when the sun stays aloft around the clock!
The 75-nautical-mile race starts in the town of Siglufjörður in North Iceland, and winds around Grimsey Island, which is traversed by the Arctic Circle. The shortest line from Scotland to Iceland is about 440 nautical miles. The distance Iceland's capital, Reykjavík, to Siglufjörður is 286 nautical miles, a route lined with majestic landscapes and filled with diverse marine life. The competition is divided into three categories:
32 – 40-foot vessels
40 – 50-foot vessels
50 foot vessels and bigger
Siglufjörður, called Sigló in daily conversation, is a friendly town sheltered by tall mountains, the Icelandic Alps. Sigló´s natural surroundings are pristine and awe-inspiring. There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy a wide range of outdoor activities, while at the same time plugging into the magic of Icelandic nature: all of North Iceland’s main natural wonders are only a short distance from Sigló.
At one time, Sigló was the centre for herring fishing and processing in the North Atlantic, an era now long past. Today, the pride of the townspeople is the Herring Era Museum, a monument to an exciting time in their history www.siglo.is/herring .
There are many interesting places near Sigló for yachtsmen to enjoy, and it is an ideally located homebase for short cruises. Cultural life in Sigló today is varied, and there is a multitude of activities to choose from. There is no better place to get to know Icelanders, and gain an insight into the Icelandic soul, than in a small, rural community.
